Australia's third largest city, Brisbane has been shut down by massive flooding.

On Wednesday the death toll reached 16 in what are the biggest floods Australia has seen in a century.

週三，死亡人數達16人，是澳大利亞本世紀所見最大的洪水。

Skyscrapers are surrounded by water as the city of 2 million has turned into a disaster zone sending thousands fleeing for higher ground, in shock over the speed of the rising water.

一幢幢摩天大樓四面被水包圍，因為這座擁有200萬人口的城市，已變成災區，將數千名受水勢高漲速度驚嚇的人，送他們逃往更高的地方。

Rescue crews are still looking for 51 people who went missing after tsunami-like flash floods tore through towns west of Brisbane this week.

這星期海嘯般突如其來的洪水，蹂躝西半部的布里斯本後，救援人員仍在尋找失踪的51人。

Stranded animals swam desperately looking for higher ground, as rescue crews tried to bring some to safety.

當救援人員試圖將一些動物帶到安全處，受困的動物們也拼命地游泳，尋找地勢較高的地方。

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard says the worst is not yet over.

澳大利亞總理朱莉婭吉拉德說，最糟糕的情況尚未結束。

As homes are inundated people are being evacuated before the water peaks at over five meters, which is expected to last for days.

由於房屋被淹沒，在高峰水位超過五米前，人民被撤離，預估水位會持續數天。

In the nearby city of Ipswich, flood waters are set to peak at nearly 20 meters.

在鄰近城市的伊普斯維奇，洪水預定在接近20米時達到高峰。

【英文說文解字】災難新聞的結構字

各位讀者好：

澳大利亞、紐西蘭目前正是夏季，布里斯本的黃金海岸是全球知名的度假勝地（resorts, retreats）。但是現在布里斯本卻遭遇一世紀以來最大的洪水（floods, flooding）。據佑計，如果布裏斯本河水位達到3.7米的話，城中將有超過9千所房屋被淹沒（be inundated）。

David老師提出「結構字」在閱讀英語新聞中的重要性。「結構字」與「關鍵字」有什麼不同呢？一篇文章如果你看懂幾個關鍵字，可能就看懂了這篇文章的意思，可是換了一篇新聞就又不懂了。但是如果你掌握的是「結構字」的話，那麼你這類的新聞就都可以看懂了。

佛教中有所有物質都是由「四大」所構成的講法，David老師就將災難新聞歸納為地、水、火、風四大類，這是屬於「水」的災難，災難可有disaster, calamity, catastrophe三種寫法。為什麼 disaster叫做災難呢？因為astro-這字根的意思就是 star 星星的意思，所以 astrology叫做「星相學」，astronomy叫做「天文學」，dis-是否定字首，所以disaster就是指「星相不對了」，所以「災難就來了」！

那麼災難新聞的「結構字」有哪些？以本篇新聞中出現的作為舉例：

在災難新聞中，一定會出現「死亡總數」（death toll）、受困者（可有the trapped, the strapped, the stranded三種寫法）、受傷者（the injured, the harmed, the wounded）。那麼「生還者」呢？那就是 survivor囉！

另外，「撤離」也是災難新聞一組很重要的「結構字」：英語新聞記者通常會使用evacuate, pull out, withdraw, retreat這四個字。

另外災難新聞中，「救援」的部份也是絕不可少的一部份。救難人員是rescue worker或者是rescue crew，救難隊是rescue team，救難行動是rescue operation，空中救援則是airlift operation。◇
