China TV and Film Go More Left

Anchor:

Chongqing authorities』 key effort to reintroduce

Chongqing Satellite TV as "First Red Channel

of the Province" resulted in a rating slump, layoff

and pay cuts. 『Time-Travel』 and 『Spirit-Themed』

dramas with high ratings in China were banned

by authorities. Foreign media said the CCP』s

(Chinese Communist Party) ban "prevents people

from rewriting history." Despite this, the film

and TV industry in China continues to go left.

Mainland China』s State Administration of Radio,

Film and Television (SARFT) recently issued

a "notice." It criticized popular 『Time-Travel』 drama

about legends and travel through history and space:

“Warp history & legend, promote feudal superstition,

fatalism, reincarnation, and ambiguous values.”

Accordingly, Hunan Satellite TV』s Palace received

very good ratings this spring. Many producers

followed suit. 『Time-Travel』 dramas are popular

in the Mainland film and television industry.

Beijing scholar and senior media professional

Ling Cangzhou thinks SARFT should guide

the industry based on the constitution. He told VOA

he feels China』s film and TV programs are dull,

lack various factors, and many of them

promote CCP』s theme of revolutionary violence.

He directed his doubts to SARFT: “Why can』t we

produce 『Time-Travel』 dramas that are not vulgar,

neither against social morality and other』s rights?”

The Chinese netizen “mgzazbb” commented:

“My travel stories are labeled as

disclosing national secrets, history stories as

alluding the present with history, war stories

as rebellious, fantasy stories as superstitious,

and biographies as slandering the leadership…”

Head of SARFT expressed that adaptations

of the four classic novels and overseas dramas

are not allowed in the short term.

Visiting professor at George Mason University,

Zhang Tianlang thinks that CCP fears film and TV

works』 gradual impact on people』s thoughts.

Zhang Tianliang: “Some classic novels are about

traditional values and people』s belief in gods;

this is why the atheistic CCP bans such works."

The Hollywood Reporter quoted media analyst

and reporter Raymond Zhou Liming, that people

allude to current events with 『Time-Travel』 dramas.

VOA thinks China』s ban on “Time-Travel” drama

signals CCP』s tightening on ideology and

China』s film and TV industry continuing to go left.

SARFT clearly requires TV stations at all levels to

actively prepare “Presents” for CCP』s 90th birthday.

Senior Mainland media professional Gao Yu:

"This year is to tighten all media. Its like Mao』s era.

Programs about wars against Kuomintang

and Japanese are allowed.”

People believe that the Cultural Revolution-style

brainwashing programs do not meet audience's taste.
