Red Plays Are Criticized as Going Too Far

Recently, China』s State Administration of Radio, Film

and Television (SARFT) made an announcement

accusing some “red revolution plays” of being “too

entertaining.” Experts say that, the Chinese Communist

Party (CCP) plays up the “revolutionary theme,” which

is not welcome, thus, play writers put more entertainment

into their plays and less propaganda, to increase ratings.

SARFT falsely criticized several productions as

“deviating from the truth, fabricating lies, and making

serious waves in China』s entertainment industry.”

The announcement claimed that these productions will

not be “filed or published.”

According to Shandong Business Daily, some Red

plays pretend to advocate the “revolutionary theme,”

but are in fact youth idol dramas or chivalrous dramas.

The report said that the play, “Anti-Japanese Qi Xia,”

portrays its characters as having supernormal skills like

Chinese kungfu and use firearms, is ludicrous.

Li Yuanhua, who once taught at the Capital Normal

University (CNU), believes that, if the Red plays obey

SARFT』s rules, they will be truly unwelcome.

Li Yuanhua said, “Actually the play writers and

directors know better. They know that making those

plays —which fabricate facts and cater for the CCP

according to SARFT』s rules —are not welcome, thus

they won』t earn a profit. So they change the appearance

and 『make yellow plays with Red clothes,』 which makes

the revolutionary plays entertaining, annoying the CCP.”

In recent years, the CCP has played up the

“revolutionary theme,” to advocate its “greatness, glory

and correctness”. Thus, Red tides of Red songs and

Red plays have been on the rise in China.

Wan Xiangshun, an art professor, said that,

the CCP always emphasizes “propaganda,”

since its false propaganda has brought it many benefits.

Wan said: “The Anti-Rightist』s Movement, the Four

Clear Movement, and the Cultural Revolution before

the June 4 incident and the persecution of Falun Gong

after June 4, are all based on lies. The CCP has

benefited a lot from lying, a tool that only it controls.”

But as time goes by, China』s people are waking up.

On June 9, Taiwan』s China Times published the letter,

“Getting Rid of Red Plays and Going Back to Real

Entertainment,” from Henan Province, which said that,

the quality of a production is determined by audience』s

remote controllers. To entertain is a natural aspect of

a TV series, it is not meant to be a political sermon.

Wan said that, the CCP claims that “all art forms

should serve politics.” The Red songs and Red plays

are all based on lies, but the lies are not hard figure out.

Wan said: “Over recent years, through Falun Gong

practitioners』 clarifying the truth and developing

counter Internet blockade software, people are getting

information, which is inaccessible through the CCP.

Chinese people are gradually breaking through

this Internet barrier and broadening their views.”

The CCP continually advocates numerous Red

activities, including “Red play infortainment,”

which are all insulting and unwelcome.

Chongqing City held an activity in which 28 female

college students dressed like “Jiang Jie” and sang

Red songs |in the Cinder Cave. These students played

the coquette as they were “doing a show” and aroused

wide criticism among netizens. A netizen said that,

“As I see it, none of the comments are positive.

With the government doing so badly, Chongqing

authorities should really think things over!”
