China』s Milk Has Lowest Standard Worldwide

Recently, media reported that Wang Dingmian,

president of Guangzhou Dairy Association said,

“China』s milk standard is the lowest in the world.

Its acceptable bacteria count in milk is 20 times

the bacteria count of the international standard.

Experts are concerned with the consequences of

increasing bacterial content in the milk.

They believe that people would still get sick,

even after the milk is pasteurized.

Beijing Times reported that Wang Dingmian criticized

China's current dairy standard for having become

the lowest standard worldwide, on June 20, 2011,

at Southern Pasteurized Milk Development Forum.

Wang also said this is caused by large corporations.

Wang said, before 2010, the milk standard stated

the maximum number of bacteria to be 500 000 and

there should be 2.95g of protein per hundred grams.

When adjusting the milk quality standard in 2010,

the authorities sought local experts』 advice.

However, 95% of the advice was disregarded.

Wang said, in large enterprises like Yili and Mengniu,

the standards of raw milk, room-temperature milk

and pasteurized milk are set by the authorities.

When China』s milk ended up with the lowest quality,

Mengniu』s exported milk was returned to China.

Its president Niu Gensheng made a back-door deal

and sold 2,500 tons of milk in Guangdong.

Wang said, in the past, the China』s milk quality

standard was already low internationally.

Now the number of bacteria increased by 1.5 million,

while protein was lowered by 0.15g per hundred grams.

Thus, our milk standard became the lowest globally.

However, Talmud, Secretary-General of

the Association of Inner Mongolia milk said,

different countries have different standards,

The Chinese authorities lower the standards somewhat,

because if only 500,000 bacteria are allowed,

most dairy products cannot meet the standard.

When the standard is relaxed to 2 million bacteria,

the milk then becomes up to standard as per authorities.

Deputy president Wei Ronglu of the Association of

Western Dairy Industry Development said that

the larger the number of bacteria in milk, the less safe.

After a substantial increase of the bacteria limit,

even pasteurized milk may make consumers sick.

Columnist Liu Hongbo of Southern Metropolis Daily

wrote that "Life Times" reported in July 2010,

in New Zealand, whole milk contains 3.2 gram of

protein per milliliter and low-fat milk, 3.7 gram.

In U.S. and EU, the number of bacteria should be

below 100,000 per milliliter. Some experts advocate

to investigate the milk with 10,000 bacteria per milliliter.

Liu pointed out, Chinese people only want to

buy good quality milk for their children.

It is peculiar to learn that as melamine is not allowed

in the milk, the protein content should be lowered.

In addition, the bacteria number limit also increased

to become 4 times of the previous limit.

It is now 20 times of that of international standard.

China』s milk will not be up to standard anywhere

except in China.
