Media Disobey Propaganda Department
Wenzhou train tragedy aroused whole nation』s indignation.
The Central Propaganda Department and Railways Ministry
are trying to cover up the truth and disregard the casualties.
Now Chinese media set off a rare wave of disobedience.
The media bans were issued by Propaganda Department
head Liu Yunshan and Politburo Standing Committee
member Li Changchun, both Jiang Zemin』s followers.
But Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao controlled Central Office
and State Office are singing from another hymn sheet.
After the July 23rd train crash, the Propaganda Department
issued a number of bans, asking the media to report
only on the "Boundless love conquering a major disaster”
and not to question or investigate the cause of the crash.
Casualty figures can only be released by the authorities.
And no reflection or comments are allowed.
On August 3, Xinhua said that Chinese Communist Party』s
(CCP) Central Committee and State Council issued
a notice urging all departments to control emergencies,
and report so-called objective progress and results.
On July 25, CCTV』s 『24 hours』 anchors Qiu and Xiao
accused the Railways Ministry of burying the wreckage.
“China, please slow down the pace, you are going too fast.
Please do not leave people』s souls behind!"
On July 27, the producer of the CCTV』s program "24 hours",
Wang Qinglei was suspended from work.
Wang blogged, “No freedom of speech;
no government accountability.
A country claiming to belong to all citizens
is in fact in the hands of a few people. Why?! Why?!
Remember, younger generation of media professionals,
hold the base line and dare to sacrifice.”
Zan Aizong (ex-Chief reporter, "China Ocean News"):
"The media does not represent reporters;
CCTV does not represent all its reporters.
Reporters are human beings and have consciences.
Some of them would rather lose jobs than obey CCP.
They can find jobs somewhere else.”
On August 2, International Federation of Reporters called
on Beijing authorities to reinstate Wang Qinglei on his job.
Hong Kong head of International Federation of Reporters
Serenade Woo criticized Central Propaganda Department
as making clear violation of the Wen Jiabao』s promises.
On July 25, the host of "News 1+1" Bai Yansong questioned
the Railways Ministry spokesman Wang Yongping.
International Correspondents Association protested
that "News 1+1" was suspended on July 26.
On July 29, seven days after the train crash,
the Central Propaganda Department issued a third ban.
It asked media to downplay the train crash report,
forcing hundreds of newspapers and periodicals
publishing on July 30, to withdrawal relevant articles.
On July 30, Hong Kong Reporters' Association called
upon the Central Propaganda Dept. to withdraw the ban.
Many newspapers still published originally edited pages.
Xiamen Daily had the character "grief" on a locomotive image
together with a touching poem entitled “In the train with you”
by a well-known scholar Yi Zhongtian.
Film professional Cheng Qingsong commented
on his microblog that "I heard a horn sound."
To protest, Shanghai-based Youth Daily used a front page
with no text, but only with Wen Jiabao』s bowing photo.
Oriental Morning Post front page had Wen』s words:
"Save people. Future will judge the Railways Ministry』s job."
Southern Metropolis Daily had the whole front page black.
titled "The truth is the best to commemorate".
It was followed by 16 pages of special report.
Gao Yu (ex-dputy editor of “Economic Weekly"):
"Because this case is too disastrous, it is such a big event,
so conscience-driven media professionals
would tell the truth."
On July 31, "Southern Metropolis Daily" published an article
saying that in the face of this tragic accident
and the way the Railways Ministry handles it,
we only want to say “a four letter word” comment.
The article was later deleted.
"Economic Observer" published earlier than scheduled
with eight pages of special report.
Readers rushed to buy it. The whole report series uses
words like “Who are murderers,”,”Man-made accident,”
"To be a media with concience" and other titles of the like.
They pursue the truth and defy the Propaganda Department.
Radio France Internationale said, CCP』s Propaganda Dept.
bans are getting closer and closer to the moral base line,
and are testing the conscience of media professionals.
Chinese media have shown great courage pursuing the truth.
Mak Yin-ting, President of HK Correspondents Association:
“CCP Central Propaganda uses this outdated way to control
public opinion. The result is bound to backfire.
Citizen』s complaints will rise,
weakening their trust in the government."
On Aug 2, Britain』s "The Independent" quoted Mr. Brown,
Asia Project director at the Royal International Institute,
that CCP』s propaganda system is breaking.
In the era of information technology,
this CCP policy is an outcast.
