Another Mongolian Herder Is Run Over
In May, Mergen, an Inner Mongolian herder,
was killed by a coal truck while protecting his grazing land.
On October 20, another herder, Zorigt, was run over
by an oil truck.
As a result, netizens launched a public mourning campaign.
Many websites and online forums were shut down
by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities.
Netizens said that the current Inner Mongolian tension was
due to the collusion between business people and CCP officials.
An ethnic Mongolian herder, Zorigt, of Uxin Banner,
was run over by an oil truck on October 20,
while trying to prevent his local grazing land
from being destroyed.
The CCP』s mouthpiece, Xinhua News Agency, claimed that
the accident was caused by a motorcycle cutting in front of a moving truck.
However, the director of Southern Mongolia Human Rights
Information Center, Enghebatu Togochog, revealed that
Zorigt was killed after he tried to prevent an oil truck
from cutting through his grassland.
After a dispute with the driver, he was viciously run over.
A massive seven-day protest began in the capital city, Hohhot,
as well as in Baotou City and neighboring towns.
The protestors urged the authorities to hold memorial services
and erect monuments for both Mergen and Zorigt.
According to information posted on Smglnc.blogspot.com
(Southern Mongolian Comment On Current Affairs),
CCP authorities shut down several websites
and online forums in Inner Mongolia.
Smglnc listed over a dozen such sites and forums.
On October 27, the largest Mongolian chat site, Boljoo, was
forced to close.
The founder, Sechent, wrote online:
“Due to warnings we received, the boljoo site was forced to close until November 15.
Take caution when posting online.”
The message was seen as evidence
that Sechent was being threatened.
Radio Free Asia reported that Oyunbilig, head of
Free Southern Mongolia (Caccp.freedomsherald.org), said
that CCP authorities prevented massive groups
of Mongolian people from going to Uxin Banner
and local hotels are prohibited from accepting
Inner Mongolia people.
In recent days, Inner Mongolian students
have been blocked from leaving their campuses.
Oyunbilig: "In Inner Mongolia, high school students have
been blocked from going outside, and outsiders are not allowed to enter the schools.
Local herders have learned about the latest accident,
however, the news has been classified as a 『state secret.』”
The CCP's Internet blockade did not end the mourning activities
in Inner Mongolian.
On October 29, Smglnc published a post titled,
Condolences to Folk Heroes Zorigt and Mergen,
asking for people to observe three minutes of silence
at 7:30 p.m. on October 29.
Xi Haiming, chairman of Human Rights League
of Inner Mongolia, pointed out that CCP authorities
adopted very threatening and cajoling means
to deal with the situation, which will only help perpetuate
similar tragedies in the future.
Xi Haiming: "The practice of providing financial compensation
to deter deceased family members from talking, should be stopped.
Today someone was run over by a truck, tomorrow
it will be someone else.
Nowadays, people will do anything for money.
But human lives are more important than money.
The issue should not be shelved, like in Mergen』s case,
just because RMB 400,000 (US$62, 912) was paid
to his family as compensation.”
A few years ago, CCP authorities began to explore
natural gas and oil in Uxin Banner.
Local gazing lands were constantly being destroyed
by the oil field drivers.
Both Mongolian herders』 death were related to their
efforts in trying to prevent these heavy trucks from cutting across their grasslands.
A netizen said, “Greedy collusion between officials
and business people, will inevitably result in ethnic groups being wiped out.”
As to the ongoing reporting of the growing tensions
in Inner Mongolia, a netizen sighed: "I just don』t know what』s wrong with the Chinese?
Murdering, running over people, and committing crimes
for money has become a very normal thing.
China is now heading down a very abnormal track.”
